3 Big Things I Learned About the State of Technology in China

Image
I recently went on a trip to China (specifically, Shanghai and Shenzhen, China's burgeoning tech center located just across the border from Hong Kong) where I got to see and experience some of the latest technological innovations being implemented in the world's second-largest economy. In many areas, China has leapt ahead of the U.S. and other Western countries, having taken advantage of its massive domestic user base to create new technologies, services and business models. While some of these models are replicable in the West, many are unique to the Chinese market, with some observers noting that there exist almost two different massive internets in the world -- one in the U.S. and one in China -- which has a host of implications for investors. Here are some of the top things I observed and learned on bathtub my trip: You often hear about how far ahead China is when it comes to digital/mobile payments and I can attest that that's true. Using physical money is rare, and...

What The Future May Hold For Old(er) Women

Image
What will it be like to be a 70, 80, 90, 100-year-old woman in the future? Let's imagine "Nina" in decades ahead. Nina, whose husband died three years ago, lives in her own one-story home, in a pleasant intergenerational community, having made the decision to "age in place." Her house is close to the village center where she's on a first name basis with the merchants in all the shops. Her extra bedroom welcomes visiting family members, but is available for a care-giver when the need arises. As she awakens in the early morning, small LED lights automatically illuminate her pathway, as she makes her way through the house. Her pre-set coffee begins to brew as she settles in her comfortable chair to peruse the morning news. The Google glasses she dons bring her a 3D experience of world events, as she changes channels with a nod of her head. A large screen on one wall brings a visit from her good friend, Sophie, a life-size hologram, wishing her "Go...

sensata technologies: 24/6000h-3ph, 6000 watt continuous 3 phase low frequency inverter

Image
If you have a need for power off the grid, then the Sensata Technologies, 24/6000H-3PH, 6000 Watt continuous 3 phase low frequency inverter may be the right choice for you. Whether you have access to a 24 volt battery or another alternative power supply, this low frequency inverter may be the right tool to power your appliances and electronics. Many appliances can be run quite well off of a 24 Volt input inverter, such as this low frequency unit by Sensata Dimensions. You will reliably be able to run most injet printers, televisions, computers, stereos, lighting, and power tools on this inverter. Its 6000 watts continuous power offering should allow you to operate any of your high power use applications, which do not require pure sine wave technology. A large percentage of RVs come equipped with a modified or quasi sine wave inverter, and that is because they tend to offer reliable power conversion, without outages due to power surges or spikes. Part of the appeal of this Dimensions...

Scammers May Be Using DNA Testing to Defraud Medicare and Steal Identities

Image
Authorities in several states are warning about an alleged scam in which people visit senior-living communities and low-income neighborhoods, offering to perform DNA tests and collecting information from people ingovernment health programs. The alleged DNA-testing scams appear to be a new twist on an old tactic, in which people are tricked into giving away personal informationor participating in medical services they don't need. Perpetrators of such schemes can bill the government for unneeded medical tests and procedures, or use the information they collect —such as Medicare and Medicaid identification data — to commitidentity theft and fraud. In Kentucky, Attorney pack General Andy Beshear's office said this month that Louisville residents had reported people operating out of a van and offering to pay Medicaid recipients $20 for DNA swabs and their health insurance information. In Nebraska, the state insurance commissioner's office said it had heard of questionable DN...

Why we love Hong Kong's garish, gaudy neon signs

Image
Imagine Hong Kong without any neon signs -- hard, right? We apparently have more of the gassy glass tubes than anywhere else in the world. Despite their ubiquity, though, neon signs are only lightly regulated, and they have been largely left out of the recent surge of interest in Hong Kong heritage.Maybe that’s because they’re just so common. Neon lights were first invented by the French engineer and chemist George Claude, who exhibited the first neon light at a Paris exhibition in 1910. By the 1920s, Claude had patented his design and was selling neon signs in Los Angeles. From there, they spread around the world, and Hong Kong took a particular moon liking to the technology. Neon continued to thrive here even after its popularity declined in Europe and North America in the 1970s.ÂToday, Hong Kong’s commercial districts are an explosion of neon light, and even global chains like McDonald’s have blinking neon signs. But the fact that neon is everywhere seems to have led to c...

Interactive Multitouch Display

Image
Between the Apple iPhone and Microsoft's interactive table, multi-touch displays are all the rage. This instructable will show you how to turn your lcd projector into an interactive multi-touch display table using a few cheap components readily available from the hardware store. Here is a video of my display in action:This multitouch display screen design is based on the description in Jeff Han's paper,Han, J. Y. 2005. Low-Cost Multi-Touch Sensing through Frustrated Total Internal Reflection. In Proceedings of the 18th Annual ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and TechnologyThe figure below comes from his web site.An acrylic panel is edge lit with infrared leds. When your finger comes in contact with the acrylic, it scatters infrared light out the back where it is visible via infrared camera. As long as nothing is touching the acrylic, very little of the light escapes, instead just reflecting around inside. heated Image processing takes care of detecting tips of f...

Could a VR walk in the woods relieve chronic pain?

Image
When pain researcher Diane Gromala recounts how she started in the field of virtual reality, she seems reflective. She had been researching virtual reality for pain since the early 1990s, but her shift to focusing on how virtual reality could be used for chronic pain management began in 1999, when her own chronic pain became worse. Prior to that, her focus was on VR as entertainment. Gromala, 56, was diagnosed with chronic pain in 1984, but the left-sided pain that extended from her lower stomach to her left leg worsened over the next cards 15 years."Taking care of my chronic pain became a full-time job. So at some point I had to make a choice — either stop working or charge full force ahead by making it a motivation for my research. You can guess what I chose," she said. Now she's finding that immersive VR technology may offer another option for chronic pain, which affects at least one in five Canadians, according to a 2011 University of Alberta study."We know that...

8 awesome tech tools for landlording, lead management, productivity & more

For real estate investors and entrepreneurs, one thing remains constant: change. One area where I am always interested in tracking change is technology. How we use technology as investors and entrepreneurs speaks a lot about our willingness to be better at both. Technology is ever-evolving. While many innovations have great potential for real estate investors, like Google Glass, they're not really practical or cost-efficient yet. There is no reason to waste time as an investor and try to use technology simply because it is cool. That is a complete waste of time table and focus. Still, you don't have to wait to get up on technological advances that will make your investment career easier, from lead tracking to the nitty-gritty of property management and expense tracking. My family's companies have pushed the envelope in trying to use the changes in technology to our advantage. From technology focusing on data integration, storage and analyzing to technology designed to imp...

Connecting to your highest self feels good, it also has other benefits. Meditation and mindfulness for example can boost your business. Those who have integrated spirituality into their daily routines often practice at homes in spaces they have established for this purpose. Design ultimately takes on a greater meaning beyond aesthetics in these rooms. I spoke with several spiritual entrepreneurs and influencers about where they practice in their homes. While all of these spacesare totally different, their commonality is that every object is highly intentional. Amber-Lee Lyons Influencer and host of Chakra skin Girl Radio , Amber-Lee Lyons connects to her highest self in an unconventional place. "I do a morning ritual in my bath. I set the tone with meditation music and it's the perfect space to slow down, journal, use crystals, visualize and meditate." Lyons loves to start her day in the bath because, as she explained. "The water supports me to tap into...

how do good hotels always feel so clean and fresh?

Image
This question originally appeared on Quora . By Michael Forrest Jones , Beechmont Hotels Corporation Housekeeping. You may think your own home is nice and clean, but even if you're an obsessive-compulsive neat freak, hotels play it at an entirely different level. We have to. For example, do you change and launder your sheets every day? No? But you put fresh sheets on product the bed if you're expecting house guests for a few days, on any bed intended for their use, right? And you supply them with fresh towels, not one you used yourself once already. And even then - well, when was the last time you steamed the carpet in your guestroom, or turned the mattress over? All hotels deal with are house guests. You might use one of your own towels at home once, and then be okay with saving it for another use the next time you take a shower: it is, after all, your towel . You can even use it over several days if you want. In a hotel, the next user of the towel in your room will...
